Since 2002, S.I.L.B. has donated over 200
biographies of successful women to various organizations that serve women
and girls in the Long Beach area. These age appropriate books were both
purchased with Club funds and donated by members. They were given to two
domestic violence shelters, a home for unwed mothers, two schools, the local
Girl Scout Council, a children's dental clinic and Camp Fire Girls. The
purpose is to introduce girls and women to a variety of career paths, to
highlight the key factors which led to their success and what contributions
they have made and are making to society. Examples include biographies of
doctors, scientists, authors, pioneers, astronauts and artists as well as
anthologies of successful women in all fields of endeavor.
We have donated to the Long Beach Public Library Foundation for the
purpose of expanding their collection of women’s biographies.
