S-Club Continuing Education Award
Application Guidelines
Purpose - Soroptimist International of Long Beach (SILB) has established the SILB S-Club Continuing Education Award as an on-going recognition of senior “S” Club members, who while maintaining satisfactory academic standards, have contributed significantly to their schools, communities and clubs. Awards are based on funds available. The Awards Committee determines the amount and number of awards given. Awardees are announced at a time determined by the Awards Committee.
Possible Award Categories (One from each category) – All categories require that the recipient participate in club activities.
Superior Service Award ($2,000) – for a member who has been involved in S-Club activities, SILB events and other outside community service activities
Leadership Award ($1,500) – for a member who has served as an officer and who has shown excellent follow through and dedication to S-club and its activities
Spirit Award ($1,500) – for a member who has overcome some obstacle in her life.
Eligibility Criteria - Candidates for the award must meet the following requirements:
1. Be a graduating “S” Club senior who has been a member of “S” Club for at least two full years prior to the submission of this application.
2. Be accepted into an accredited program at a vocational school, college or university.
3. Participated in community service through S-Club.
Application Procedures - To apply for this award, applicants must submit the following information by April 1st to:

1. A completed application form
2. An official high school transcript
3. A copy of acceptance letter to college or university
4. Two letters of recommendation
- One from school principal, counselor, teacher, or S-Club Advisor
- One from outside of school
5. A typed essay of 500 – 750 words including responses to the following:
- How has S-Club involvement influenced you (e.g., your ideas, your sense of self, your understanding of the importance of community service) and how will you use this experience to help others?
- What have you enjoyed the most about being in S-Club?
- Describe any extenuating circumstance in your life or obstacle you have overcome.
Applications will be judged on:
1. Essay
2. Leadership
2. Extenuating circumstance (for Spirit award only)
3. School and community service
4. Letters of recommendation
5. Oral interview (Optional, only if time permits)
Payment of Award
Upon proof of enrollment in college or university, payment will be sent directly to the school. Money must be claimed within six months from date of award.

SCORING SYSTEM
Essay – up to 20 points
Complete package –15 points
SILB/S-Club activities – up to 30 points
Extenuating circumstance – 10 points (applicable only to Spirit Award bonus)
Letters of recommendation – 15 points
Other community service – up to 20 points
Soroptimist members and their families are not eligible for scholarships from SILB.
