Community Service Programs

Awards, Grants, & Scholarships

Soroptimist International of Long Beach (SILB) is a volunteer service organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls, in local communities and throughout the world.

In addition to the community gifts listed above, SILB will have a limited sum each year to distribute to nonprofit or public benefit organizations for worthy projects that improve the quality of life in our community.  Grant application guidelines are outlined below.

Soroptimist International of Long Beach has an ongoing commitment to the following projects:

Scholarships

  • Gladdes B. Neff Soroptimist Scholarship Fund - Scholarships for students at California State University Long Beach in the last year of study for a degree in a health care field.
  • Helen Diamond Soroptimist Scholarship - A grant from Women in Management allows us to give a $2,500 award to a business student at California State University Long Beach or Long Beach City College. Please click the link to find application materials.
  • Katherine White, M.D. Scholarship - Honors Dr. Katherine White, a dedicated leader in Soroptimist International of Long Beach for 42 years. The honoree is a student who has successfully overcome personal adversity and is also a prior Soroptimist scholarship winner.
  • S-Club Continuing Education Award - an on-going recognition of senior “S” Club members, who while maintaining satisfactory academic standards, have contributed significantly to their schools, communities and clubs. Please click the link to find application materials.
  • Scholarships – Scholarships for students at Long Beach City College, high school students, and Women in Philanthropy at California State University, Long Beach.

Cash Awards

  • Women's Opportunity Award - Cash grants for women heads of households, seeking to improve their employment status by gaining additional education and skills. Please click the link to find application materials.
  • Violet Richardson Award - Cash grants recognizing high school girls who volunteer in their community. Please click the link to find application materials.
  • Meals on Wheels of Long Beach - Meal delivery to elderly & disabled homebound persons

Awards of Excellence

The Soroptimist Women Who Make A Difference Awards and the Ruby Award - Recognition for women and organizations that advance the status of women and girls.

Community Service Projects

  • Breast Cancer Awareness - Promotes awareness, early detection, prevention, & follow-up treatment for breast cancer.
  • Literacy –  Donations of books, including biographies of famous women, to local libraries, schools, and extended care facilities.
  • Shopping with Soroptimists - For women who are entering or re-entering the workforce: outfitting women for work
  • Helping Hands – Assists victims of domestic violence
 

Grant Proposal Guidelines


Application Information
In addition to the community gifts listed above, SILB will have a limited sum each year to distribute to nonprofit or public benefit organizations for worthy projects that improve the quality of life in our community. 

SILB is especially interested in projects that benefit women and girls which is consistent with the mission of our service organization.

There is no application form.  Applicants should submit the following:

  • Letter describing the project in no more than two pages. Please include a statement which specifies the way your organization will publicize SILB's contribution.
  • Annual project budget
  • Proof of nonprofit status or public benefit status

  • Range of gifts:  $100 to $3,000.
  • Grants are one-time-only with no renewal implied.
  • Deadline for applications is March 5 of each year.
  • To be considered, applications must be postmarked by the deadline.
  • Applications should be sent by U.S. postal service to the address below only.
  • No applications which arrive by fax or email will be considered.
